What Do Moms Deserve?

The family values crowd talks endlessly about our “precious” children and that they deserve loving care by their moms.

〰 ⚤ 〰

What do moms deserve?

〰 ⚤ 〰

Better than a dead-end, unpaid job with no pension, no benefits, and no recognition. Better than to be run to death by work. Better than to be trapped in poverty.

Want Women to Return to the Home?

Work done by men commands more respect than that done by women. Paid work commands more respect than unpaid.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Important note to Family Values crowd: Want women to return to the home?

〰 ⚤ 〰

Pay women enough to make the role sufficiently attractive for men to want it.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!

Want women to stay at home?

— ⚤ —

Time to put our societal money where our fundamentalist family values mouth is.

Make motherhood a real career. Provide mothers with decent pay, medical benefits, a pension, and educational opportunities.

— ⚤ —

No woman should ever be trapped in poverty because she chooses children.

No mother should have to worry about her children because of losing her husband – whether due to abandonment, illness, or death.

No mother should ever have to choose between an abusive husband and homelessness for herself and her kids.

— ⚤ —

If we can afford sports and war, we can afford kids and stay-at-home moms.

SAFE BET: If Men Did It, They’d Measure It – And Pay It Properly

“Woman’s work” is work and it is worth a lot to our Society: If women were to disappear and men had to do the housework, as well as birth and raise the kids, what would happen to GDP as currently measured?

— ⚤ —

It would fall significantly as men had to withdraw from the paid economy to perform the unpaid and unrecognized wifely duties.

— ⚤ —

But you can bet if men were doing the bulk of the housework and childcare that they’d find some way to measure it – and it would be damned well-paid work to boot!

Worthless Work, Worthless Women

Economists tell us “woman’s work” is worthless.

— ⚤ —

Worthless work
=
Worthless women

— ⚤ —

Always remember: A society uses cues from economic signals to develop its laws, policies, and family-based arrangements.

The Patriarchy rests on a severely distorted view of economic wealth, social well-being, and the value of women.

No wonder it is such a screwed-up and failing system.

Ungrateful Husbands and Idiot Economists

Think about how GDP is measured: If a woman looks after a house, and cares for her own children in that house, then she is not working and contributes nothing to the economy.

Interesting how similar the attitudes of the ungrateful husband and the economist who measures GDP.

The husband says, “You never contributed anything to the marriage.”

The economist says, “You never contributed anything to the economy.”

If It’s NOT Paid, It’s NOT Real Work

Men have CHOSEN to define ONLY paid labour as work.

— ⚤ —

That is why a man can say to the wife of 30 years, who slaved to feed him, give him sex, care for him, clean his house and raise their family, “You contributed nothing to this marriage … and now you think you’re entitled to half of what I created?”

— ⚤ —

The operative word is “slaved”:

Slave labour is not work … housework is not work … childcare is not work … husband-care is not work.

Her contribution to his success may be ignored, because by definition, it was not real.

Woman’s work = The Foundation of Society

“Women know what men have long forgotten. The ultimate economic and spiritual unit of any civilization is still the family.”
Clare Boothe Luce

An economy’s future, and its quality of life, largely rest on the unpaid labour of women. Yet our huge contribution registers nowhere in GDP.

⚢ —

It is “woman’s work” to birth the next generation, to fashion a haven – a safe, clean, warm and loving environment – in which a family can blossom.

It is “woman’s work” to ensure that children are cared for, loved, and grow-up to be healthy, law-abiding and productive.

It is “woman’s work” to create the meals which produce strong bodies and minds. Without us, productivity would decline and social costs would rise.

⚢ —
Why are we are invisible?

Our contribution may be unmeasured, unrecorded, and unpaid, yet our role is absolutely and undeniably crucial to the functioning of a healthy, successful Society.

Indeed, “woman’s work” is far more essential to our species’ survival, to our happiness, and to our quality of life, than work performed in a mine, a factory, an office, or a store.

Don’t Get No Respect, Ladies, ‘Less You Charge For It!

If a woman looks after a house and cares for her own children in her own home, then according to statisticians she is not working.

But if she takes paid employment, pays someone else to raise her children, and to care for her house, then she, the nanny, and the domestic would all be classified as working.

Conclusion:
Caring for a house and children is work only if money changes hands.

Don’t get no respect, ladies, ‘less you charge for it!

Don’t Upset The Patriarchy

What men do is work.

〰 ⚤ 〰

What women do is …

〰 ⚤ 〰

Well, economists may not have a word for it, but ladies (be good girls, now!), those thousands of hours you devote annually to house and family – you wouldn’t want to upset the Patriarchy by actually claiming it is work, would you?
