Housewives Only Contribute to GDP When…

Imagine a housewife who diligently cares for her house and children.

She makes no contribution to the economy according to GDP, the traditional measure of economic wealth.

Now imagine she drowns the children and burns the house down.

This would lead to an increase in measured economic wealth!

The cost of firefighters and police, of vehicles and gas, of burials, of clean-up and rebuilding, of lawyers and courts … all would contribute to GDP.

Keeping her locked-up, fed and clothed; providing psychiatric treatment, social-workers, building maintenance, prison guards and security … all would contribute to GDP.

Would anyone but an economist think that her actions brought anything but harm to her family, her community, and the economy?

Women Contribute Nothing to GDP?

Think about how GDP is measured: If a woman looks after a house, and cares for her own children in that house, then she is not working and contributes nothing to the economy.

But if she takes paid employment, and pays others to raise her children and care for the house, then she, the nanny, and the domestic would all be classified as contributing to GDP.

Conclusion: Caring for a house and children is work only if money changes hands.

Interesting how similar the attitudes of the ungrateful husband and the economist who measures GDP.

The husband says, “You never contributed anything to the marriage.”

The economist says, “You never contributed anything to the economy.”

You never contributed anything to the marriage…

Being a full-time, traditional wife and mom is exhausting and hard-labour.

You juggle multiple roles and duties: You cook, you clean, you care for the kids. Housekeeping, day-care, teaching, accounting, laundry, managing, organizing, driving, psychology, nursing, lover, friend, advisor, companion.

You work over 90 hours a week.

You make a haven for hubby so he may focus on his career and his advancement.

All this and sex, too, for no pay.

You are exhausted and frustrated and would like some recognition and some compensation.

So, what does hubby claim at the divorce?

“You never contributed anything to the marriage.”

No Wife of Mine Will Work!

In my Father’s day, men kept the little woman in the house with the statement, “No wife of mine will work!”

〰  ⚤ 〰

Correction:
Women have always worked brutally long, hard hours caring for house, hubby, and heirs.

〰  ⚤ 〰

What men really meant was: “No wife of mine will do PAID work.”

The Unpaid Woman: Modern Slaves

Society would come to a halt without women and without women’s work.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Yet Society looks down on women and their work. Society deems “woman’s work” as something we should contribute for free.

The unpaid woman: The best deal Society ever instituted since slavery.
