Pregnancy is the sixth leading cause of death among women aged 20 to 34 in the United States.
Before the 20th century, it is estimated between 1,000 and 2,000 women per 100,000 died due to pregnancy. Childbirth was the leading cause of death for women aged 15 to 45 for most of human history, killing more than one in three women. It was so dangerous that a woman would make out her will as soon as she found out she was pregnant.
Historically, more women have died in childbirth than soldiers have died in war.
