It’s Official: Unpaid Housework Isn’t Work!

When measuring GDP, housework becomes real ONLY when someone pays for it.

〰 ⚤ 〰

As with history, economics has been defined by dominant males:

Men do paid labour.

That IS work.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Women do unpaid labour.

That IS NOT work.

The Mismeasure of Woman

Official stats such as GDP do not begin to capture the number of hours women work.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Male defined stats, which get it so wrong … men refuse to record the benefits to our families, to our communities, to the nation, to the world, of “woman’s work”.

〰 ⚤ 〰

The mismeasure of woman:

Female work – unmeasured, unrecorded, and unrewarded.

Only An Economist or an Idiot …

Imagine a housewife who diligently cares for her house and children.

She makes NO contribution to the economy according to GDP, the traditional measure of economic wealth.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Now imagine she drowns the children and burns the house down.

This would lead to an increase in economic wealth!

〰 ⚤ 〰

The cost of firefighters and vehicles, the clean-up and rebuilding of the house, the lawyers, the court case … all would contribute to GDP.

Keeping her locked-up, fed and clothed; providing psychiatric treatment, social-workers, building maintenance, prison guards, security, etc. … all would contribute to GDP.

〰 ⚤ 〰

But, would anyone other than an economist or an idiot think that her actions brought anything but harm to her family, her community, and the economy?

In Memoriam

IN MEMORIAM

〰 ⚤ 〰

Around the world, on the front-line of the battle against COVID-19, are doctors, nurses, EMTs, technicians, cleaners, porters, administrators, volunteers, and other health care workers, daily risking infection and death to provide others with selfless care.
They are overwhelmingly female and disproportionately Black, Asian, and other minorities. Their hours are long; their pay, benefits, and job security too often inadequate; while the efforts taken for their health and safety have commonly been insufficient.

〰 ⚤ 〰

All of them are putting their lives at risk for others – for you and for me – because that is what they do. Estimates are that they represent more than 7% of documented COVID cases. And they are dying every day – with that death toll rising rapidly. No one knows for sure how many of these heroes we have lost: They are the “unsung” – there is often no tally of their death and their names are usually not recorded for posterity.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Their sacrifice must not be forgotten … and it must not be in vain!
Mourn their loss, but most importantly, in loving honor of their memory, commit to fighting for all workers to get the protections they need for their safety and health, for real jobs with security and benefits, for a living-wage, and for equality.

Super Heroes

Super-heroes work quietly, unrecognized, for the good of others.

They clean up the world’s mess; they care for the helpless; they comfort the innocent.

Time to turn housewives into super-heroes.

½ of Total National Output

Women workers contribute 40% of GDP in developed nations, but what if housework was included in Gross National Product?

In developed economies women produce about 40% of official GDP.

— ⚤ —

However, women also do most of the housework – 70% of it. If the value of this housework (calculated at the average wage for a nanny or domestic – that is, at artificially low wages) were included in GNP, then we would produce significantly over ½ of total national output.

— ⚤ —

What our contribution to economic wealth would be if the true value to Society of “women’s work” was recognized, and we were compensated the way sports celebrities are, is mind boggling.

Uxorious Platitudes

Those who extol motherhood the highest are those who expect you to sacrifice the most to achieve it.

They unctuously ooze uxorious platitudes … ohhhh, we soooo value the important work of mothers at home caring for the family.

But not enough to pay you.

What Do Moms Deserve?

The family values crowd talks endlessly about our “precious” children and that they deserve loving care by their moms.

— ⚤ —

What do moms deserve?

— ⚤ —

Better than a dead-end, unpaid job with no pension, no benefits and no recognition. Better than to be run to death by work.
Better than to be trapped in poverty.

Mom: Society’s Future

Want to equate child care and motherhood with sacrifice in a world in which women have education and options?

Then get used to no children.

Proper support of mothers, and their children, is NOT entitlement.
It is NOT welfare … it is Society’s future.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Want women to stay at home?

— ⚤ —

Time to put our societal money where our fundamentalist family values mouth is.

— ⚤ —

Make motherhood a real career. Provide mothers with decent pay, medical benefits, a pension, and educational opportunities.

— ⚤ —

No woman should ever be trapped in poverty because she chooses children.

— ⚤ —

No mother should have to worry about her children because of losing her husband – whether due to abandonment, illness, or death. No mother should ever have to choose between an abusive husband and homelessness for herself and her kids.

— ⚤ —

If we can afford sports and war, we can afford kids and stay-at-home moms.
