It’s Official: Unpaid Housework Isn’t Work!

When measuring GDP, housework becomes real ONLY when someone pays for it.

〰 ⚤ 〰

As with history, economics has been defined by dominant males:

Men do paid labour.

That IS work.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Women do unpaid labour.

That IS NOT work.

The Mismeasure of Woman

Official stats such as GDP do not begin to capture the number of hours women work.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Male defined stats, which get it so wrong … men refuse to record the benefits to our families, to our communities, to the nation, to the world, of “woman’s work”.

〰 ⚤ 〰

The mismeasure of woman:

Female work – unmeasured, unrecorded, and unrewarded.

Only An Economist or an Idiot …

Imagine a housewife who diligently cares for her house and children.

She makes NO contribution to the economy according to GDP, the traditional measure of economic wealth.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Now imagine she drowns the children and burns the house down.

This would lead to an increase in economic wealth!

〰 ⚤ 〰

The cost of firefighters and vehicles, the clean-up and rebuilding of the house, the lawyers, the court case … all would contribute to GDP.

Keeping her locked-up, fed and clothed; providing psychiatric treatment, social-workers, building maintenance, prison guards, security, etc. … all would contribute to GDP.

〰 ⚤ 〰

But, would anyone other than an economist or an idiot think that her actions brought anything but harm to her family, her community, and the economy?

“Woman’s Work” Doesn’t Count Because It Doesn’t Pay

Women – read about them in their hundreds of thousands on Wikipedia – and all but a few of them excluded from his-story.

But, did you also know that men have written women out of economics?

“Woman’s work” does NOT get counted in the measurement of GDP.

〰 ⚤ 〰

That’s right, ladies – the thousands of hours you devote every year to ensuring the success of the fundamental unit of the economy, the family, counts for **NOTHING** in the National Accounts.

〰 ⚤ 〰

Why?

Because, silly you, you didn’t get paid for doing it – and unpaid work is deemed worthless work, not worthy of being included in calculating GDP, the economic activity of a country!

〰 ⚤ 〰

All hail male logic: If we don’t pay you for it, if instead, we steal it from you, well, then it ain’t real, and we don’t have to record it – nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah!
