Our cartoons encourage you to think deeply and critically about what you read, hear, and see … we want you to look at what we have so long taken for granted, to question it, to get riled-up, and also to perhaps smile at the astonishing silliness, the senselessness of the things the world has come to accept – nay, expect – of its daughters.

Feminine Riles: Cartoons To Promote Thought is a gorgeously illustrated, witty, and original look at patriarchy. It is a fascinating meditation on the system which underlies modern reality; a system which has dominated human history for about 4 millennia, siring slavery, feudalism, mercantilism, colonialism, capitalism, communism, authoritarianism … you name the ism, you will probably find patriarchal genes lurking within its DNA.
Patriarchy
Patriarchy is a human artefact. It is neither god-given nor natural – instead, it is a particularly ugly man-made relic which lies at the foundation of so many dysfunctional social systems. A relic built on the concepts of male superiority, misogyny and militarism; the dominance of a few, the enslavement and expendability of the many; the worship of fleeting physical wealth and lining the pockets of the “superior”, regardless of the pain, misery or destruction that may cause; the ruthless exploitation of everything (animal, mineral, vegetable) the dominant can get their greedy hands upon, even if that should destroy the future for our descendants; the objectification of “the other”, including our Mother the Earth; and the hatred of anyone not of our tribe, as well as those of the tribe who do not slavishly and mindlessly follow its rules for behaviour.
It is our cri de cœur that it is past time to topple this oppressive and destructive system.

Cartoons are about using satire to expose lies, to illuminate wrongs, to skewer the powerful, to expose hypocrisy and stupidity, to reveal the ugly truths so often concealed behind the accepted and the conventional.
They are extraordinarily powerful because of their ability to penetrate hearts and minds.
A good cartoon will make you think deeply about what you thought you understood about the world; it may make you change your mind about the issues. A brilliant cartoon provides an insight which is incendiary, provoking your anger, even while you laugh.

THOUGHTS FOR WHEN SOMEONE SPOUTING “FAMILY VALUES” ATTACKS A NON-TRADITIONAL FAMILY AS NOT FAMILY VALUES:
Have you noticed “family values” people care for only one type of family? The patriarchal, male-run, straight, married couple and their offspring. Anything else is an abomination in the eyes of their patriarchal god and beliefs.
Have you noticed that, provided it meets their criterion for “family”, it can be abusive, hate-filled and non-supportive of its members, and “family values” people will jump to its defense? And the always repeated mantra is not that the male – the usual abuser – needs counselling or should be dumped, but that it is the responsibility of his wife to understand him, to use her “love” and “submission” to gently guide him on to a better path. And if she can’t, well she didn’t try hard enough, or was not submissive or loving enough, and thus deserves the hell he inflicts on her and her kids. Really, can’t you see how it must all be her fault?
Have you noticed that escape for the abused is not an option in the “family values” worldview? That if a wife leaves her abuser, she is to blame for breaking-up the family. She is subjecting her children to a dysfunctional set-up which will scar them for life, turning them into delinquents, losers and criminals. That she and her children deserve the poverty, hardships and suffering that are the usual fate when the wife dares to say “No more!” to the “head of the family”? Afterall, the male is the sun around which all revolves, and what kind of universe would the planets live-in if they were to leave its orbit? Well, very obviously a cold, dark one …
Have you noticed that, any other family structure, no matter how loving, kind or supportive of its members, is met with hostility? That “family values” involve ignoring all the potential bonds which create a familial relationship and that their values are skewed towards one thing – do it our way or else.
Perhaps we should be asking ourselves, is “family values” about true family? And just what kind of “values” do they subscribe to?

THE SO-CALLED “TRADITIONAL” NUCLEAR FAMILY DATES FROM THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, MAKING IT A PUNY 200 YEAR “TRADITION” IN A SPECIES WITH A 5+ MILLION YEAR HISTORY
Prior to that, “family values” were defined as very extended, including a broad array of related and non-related people (e.g., the Greeks and several other cultures were into homosexual unions and lesbianism was a common event in harems).
During the approximately 4 millennia of patriarchy, “family values” meant one man (The Patriarch) plus multiple wives, concubines and handmaids, his young children, as well as the man’s adult sons and their families, plus servants, slaves and domestic animals, with him keeping them all in their place, dominating them, showing them who is boss, and forcing them into submission if they failed to understand their expected role.
Notice the only consistent “family values” concept in patriarchy is NOT the structure of the family, but the right of a male to abuse and use those deemed to be part of HIS household.
Time to topple this idiotic system which is merely an excuse for male oppression and violence.

What exactly do we mean by the term “family values”? What is a family? And what exactly are the values it ought to reflect?
Is a family only a heterosexual couple and their offspring? Why is it not recognized that for most of history, this was not the definition of family?
The nuclear family dates only from the later stages of the industrial revolution, meaning it has existed for fewer than 2 centuries in a species which originated 4 to 7 million years ago. For most of that history, a family was much more broadly defined – as extended family – including a host of relatives (the clan), slaves, servants, and the surrounding village/community (the tribe).
Often the father was not even at home – for the approximately 4 millennia of patriarchy, men would generally go off to war, leaving their families alone for years. And prior to patriarchy, matrilineal groupings were very common, in which the children belong to the Mother’s clan, with the male role model being her brothers, while the father of the child, rarely hung-around to raise them. Indeed, given their hazy notions of how reproduction worked, the father may not have even realized he had had a role in that infant which suddenly appeared many months after he met its mother.
As to values, are we truly comfortable that so much of what is touted as “family values” too often looks like hypocrisy? That it involves oppression, abuse and dysfunction, all covered-over by pretty words and turning a blind-eye to what is really occurring in far too many families? That these so-called “values” require family members suffering in silence so that a vocal minority can feel better about itself and its beliefs?
When do we admit that family values too often means valuing the delusion of family over valuing what a family truly ought to be?

In a patriarchy, men keep the little woman in the house with the statement, “No wife of mine will work!”
LET’S CORRECT THAT: Wives have always worked brutally long, hard hours caring for house, hubby and heirs.
What men really meant to say was, “No wife of mine will do PAID work.”
But, if work is unpaid, then patriarchy deems it to be worthless. And worthless work makes for worthless workers.
Thus, prohibiting women from getting paid for their labour ensured that they would be judged as worthless.
Indeed, wives in a patriarchy are seen as parasites, lolling around the house, doing nothing and living-off the paid work done by their husbands. They contribute nothing to the family; their husband contributes everything.
Out of this moronic lie springs the concept of Family Values – a toxic worldview which sees life in black and white: A TRUE FAMILY consists ONLY of a man, HIS wife and HIS children. The man is the head of the household and the rest of the family are his serfs to command, to abuse and to use. The male is the sun around which all must revolve – the centre of the patriarchal universe, his word is law and his behaviour, no matter how questionable, may not be questioned.

The patriarchal playbook is simple. It was created by brutal conquerors about 4 millennia ago using three basic concepts:
• SLAVERY
In a SLAVE SOCIETY, those defined as superior by their class / religion / wealth / education / genetic heritage (e.g., male and Caucasian) are masters – privileged, entitled, despots. Everyone else is an underling who may be used, abused, and disposed of at the whim of a master. Slaves are forced into brutal competition with each other for the master’s approval, to gain rights, privileges and the hope of protection from being sold to a worse master. Slaves who are not proper “team-players” may be disposed of.
• MILITARISM
A MILITARISTIC SOCIETY is organized into layered ranks of masters and underlings: The King is supreme. His nobles control all below them, their knights control those below them … and so on for every level of society and every group in it. The world is a bureaucratic triangle, with a few in the top levels giving orders and hoarding the wealth. A small layer of sycophants supports the top, while the multitude at the bottom are expected to do as they are told, uphold the system, toil to create the wealth and feel gratitude for any crumbs which fall from above.
• MALE DOMINANCE AND EXCLUSION
In a society of MALE DOMINANCE AND EXCLUSION a few privileged men are on top and those who are defined as “the other” are restricted from climbing the hierarchy. Thus, patriarchy is rampant with sexism, racism, homophobia and prejudice against anyone who is different – disability, wrong creed, those banished from the tribe - “criminals, traitors, or blasphemers” (i.e., anyone deemed not a “team player”).
Does that sound like the place where you work?
For a better future, we need a new playbook, a new set of rules, a new way to manage ourselves and those around us ... and that means toppling the patriarchy along with its systemic, abusive rules.

So, to all of you dedicated, hard-working Moms, busting your butt this weekend, ain’t it nice that patriarchy has set aside one day of the year to celebrate your slavery and to extol your devotion to their chosen higher cause.

It’s called HOMOPHILY or the tendency for us to seek out or be attracted to those we perceive to be similar to ourselves. In a patriarchal society, where men, particularly white men, occupy the key power positions, they will tend to look for versions of themselves when choosing whom to mentor, whom to hire, whom to promote, whom to favour for that grant or referral.
That means women and minorities are struggling to compete on a playing field which is hugely tilted in favour of males, particularly white ones.
This is why affirmative action IS essential. Why it IS ABOUT justice, equity and fairness. Why it IS NOT “reverse discrimination” in a society in which certain groups have always had the advantage, playing a game which has been designed to prefer them, no matter how mediocre, over someone deemed “other”, no matter how competent.
